Language specialists came together today (Thursday) to discuss plans to set up a National Centre for the Standardisation of Welsh Terminology.
This was the Task Group’s first meeting, chaired by Huw Jones, member of the Welsh Language Board.
The Group will consider the precedent already set by a number of different bodies in Wales, along with language planning and terminology work carried out in other countries.
Meirion Prys Jones, Chief Executive of the Welsh Language Board said:
“A National Centre will help raise the status of Welsh and increase the use of the language, and will be a boost for the translation profession.”
The Group will submit recommendations on the role and procedures of the Centre to the Heritage Minister by summer 2008.
The Heritage Minister, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, said:
"I’m glad that the Welsh Language Board, the Welsh Assembly Government Translation Service and other partners are working together to build on the work already produced in the field of terminology. I look forward to receiving the Group’s recommendations."
