Bilingual Workplaces

Bilingual call centreMany establishments in Wales already use the Welsh language in the workplace, either in part or in full.

The Welsh Language Board believes that the Welsh language should be promoted in the workplace as well as at home and in the community.

Increasing the use of the Welsh language in the workplace could also lead to a better standard of service for customers, as well as making a key contribution to the development of a skilled, flexible and confident workforce.

The Board supports the use of the Welsh language in the workplace by:

  • Promoting bilingual workplaces through the agreement of Welsh language schemes which influence an individual's language use in the workplace
  • Supporting workplace related projects, such as the Promoting Bilingual Workplaces Project
  • Developing and providing goods and tools which support the use of the Welsh language in the workplace

Practical and Financial Support

The Welsh Language Board offers practical and financial support for internal administration projects aimed at increasing the internal use of the Welsh language.

The 'Bilingual Workplaces' scheme is based on the Board’s advice document Promoting and Facilitating Bilingual Workplaces.

Any workplace can be eligible for this scheme, but priority is given to projects that will generate substantial or innovative change in the use of Welsh in the workplace.

Application process for project funding is held annually. The details will be provided here before and during the application period.
