Advice for Third Sector Bodies

One of the main aims of the Welsh Language Board is to increase the opportunities to use the Welsh language. As part of this the Board believes that increasing the use of the Welsh language in the third sector is a very important element in realising that goal. This aim is in line with the Welsh Assembly Government’s wish to increase bilingualism in the sector. The aim is also important in terms of the increasing emphasis given to the third sector in the delivery of public services, with a particular emphasis on partnership working.

Over recent years a number of third sector organisations, national and local, have set about providing bilingual services in a creative and enthusiastic way, outside the requirements of the Welsh Language Act.  They have done so through their own choice.

Many organisations have done so through Welsh language schemes which state how they intend to set about providing and developing bilingual services.  These organisations recognise that offering a service in the users’ language choice is a core element of best practise and equality of opportunity.
