It is important that Welsh terminology is available in order to facilitate the use of Welsh in all areas of life.
The Board has been working in the field of terminology from the very beginning. To facilitate this work it convened a team of language experts, the Terminology Standardization Team, and consults with subject specialists when undertaking projects in specific fields. It follows specific Guidelines which have been developed to assist the Board and others to standardize Welsh terminology.
You can read the Guidelines for Standardizing Welsh Terminology by clicking here.
The Board publishes the terms that it standardizes in the National Database of Terms, or in pdf format. There are links to these on the right hand side of this page.
The following organizations also work in the field of terminology. You can find links to their databases on the right hand side of this page. They are available for use free of charge:
- Welsh Assembly Government Translation Service [TermCymru]
- ACCAC's Education up to 16 Terms [Y Termiadur]
- Terms standardized by Bangor University's Terminology Standardization Centre [Gateway Terms]
Remember that there are other paper dictionaries and terminology lists also available to assist you in using Welsh. A useful list of these can be found on the Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters’ website (link on the right).
