Success for Cardiff companies in WLB awards
04/07/2002
Companies and organisations in Cardiff and the south east have managed to make their mark in this year’s Welsh Language Board Bilingual Design Awards, reaching the shortlist in a hard-fought competition, which attracted almost 1000 entries.
Imaginet, Elfen and Peter Gill and Associates were among the successful local designers in a wide ranging competition.
Rhodri Williams, the Board’s Chair said:
“It’s obvious that the scheme has grasped the imagination of designers and organisations in Cardiff and the south east, again this year. The competition clearly shows that it is possible to create high quality bilingual design – whether it’s a poster, a sign or a package. I am also delighted with the number of entries in the new media category, as this proves that Welsh has a role to play on the internet and on all kinds of CD-Roms.”
The Board developed the competition in conjunction with the National Eisteddfod and the Design Wales, to promote excellence, quality and the creativity of designers in Wales.
The five categories are:
Advertising Award - including posters, billboards or print ads. Sponsored by Westdale Press.
Promotion Award - including literature and any promotional materials or goods. Sponsored by the Nationwide Building Society.
Food and Drink Packaging Award - including all kinds of food and drink packages. Sponsored by the Welsh Development Agency.
Signage Award - including large and small, internal and external signs. Sponsored by Tesco.
New Media Award - including websites, multi media presentations and promotional CD-Roms. Sponsored by Camelot.
The award ceremony will be held on Thursday 18 July at Tredegar House, Newport, and the winning work will then be exhibited in the Arts and Crafts Pavilion at the National Eisteddfod in Pembrokeshire. The commissioning organisation and the winning designer will both receive recognition – a certificate for the designers and a striking trophy for the commissioning organisation.
