Cysgliad: Welsh language tools for the Mac now available free of charge

02/04/2008

Welsh language tools for Apple Mac OS X are now available to download free of charge, thanks to the cooperation between the Welsh Language Board and the Language Technologies Unit at Canolfan Bedwyr, Bangor University.

This is the first time that Apple Mac OS X users have been able to use a comprehensive set of spelling and grammar checkers for Welsh, together with a suite of bilingual Welsh / English dictionaries. In a similar fashion to the existing product offering, Cysgliad for Apple Mac OS X will work with most of users' everyday application software.

The Apple Mac version of Cysgliad was produced with the aid of a grant from the Welsh Language Board. Meirion Prys Jones, Chief Executive of the Welsh Language Board, said:

“This is a very important development for the Welsh language, and we are extremely glad that this tool is available free of charge for Welsh-speakers to use in their everyday lives, both at work or at home. It follows other exiting developments in Welsh language technology, including free language interface packs for Microsoft Office and Windows.”

Delyth Prys, leader of the Language Technologies Unit at Canolfan Bedwyr, said:

“Previously, Cysgliad was only available for Microsoft Windows but we received numerous requests for a version to run on Apple Mac OS X computers. The use of Apple Mac OS X for home and professional use has grown in recent years. Graphic designers, publishers and photographers in particular prefer to use Apple Mac OS X, and provision of Welsh language tools is essential for them to check the quality of their Welsh language output.”
