Llangollen, home of the International Eisteddfod, is the location of the Welsh Language Board’s open meeting on 5 March 2010, and Chief Executive of the
festival, Mervyn Cousins, will give a presentation to members about the preparations for this year’s Eisteddfod.
Gwawr Cordiner, Chief Officer of Flintshire, Denbighshire and Maelor Language Initiative, will come to speak about the work of the North Wales Language Initiatives. Members will also hear about the Strategy for Nursery Education by Hywel Jones, Chief Executive of Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin.
The Welsh Assembly Government is expected to publish a draft Measure on the Welsh language in early March, and members will discuss their initial response to the Measure in this meeting.
Chair of the Board, Meri Huws, said:
"The publication of the Measure in the Assembly will be an event of great importance to the development of the Welsh language, and will lead to an exciting period of discussion at a national level for several months. Here in Llangollen, Board members will discuss the contents of the measure for the first time, and I’m sure it will be a lively discussion.
"But to prevent us getting from getting too carried away in legislative matters, I believe that the presentations regarding the work of the grassroots initiatives and nursery education are also of great importance. People in these organisations come to daily contact with the people of Wales on a community level and make a vital contribution towards the future of the language.
"It's hard to think about Llangollen without thinking about the International Eisteddfod. It’s good to see a real effort being made by festival organisers to give a more prominent place to the Welsh language in the Eisteddfod in recent years. We congratulate them on producing a voluntary Welsh language policy, and look forward to hear the latest developments regarding arrangements for this year’s festivities."
There is a warm welcome to the people of Llangollen and Denbighshire to attend the meeting, and to share their ideas and to ask questions about the Board’s work and about the Welsh language in general.
The meeting will be held between 9.00-12.00, Friday 5 March 2010 at The Wild Pheasant Hotel, Llangollen.
Translation will be provided.
