We offer advice on the standard forms of Welsh place-names in Wales to individuals and institutions of all kinds, in every part of the country. The Board recommends the standard forms of place-names but cannot legislate as to the standard forms.

Local Authorities hold the right to decide on the names of streets and places within their boundaries but we advise many Local Authorities in Wales.

The Board is advised by an authority in the field, Professor Hywel Wyn Owen from the Place-names Research Centre in Bangor and by the Standardisation of Place-names Team.

The Standardisation of Place-names Team follows strict guidelines when standardising place-names (see links to relevant documents on the right hand side of this screen)
