You do not have to be able to speak Welsh for your child to benefit from a Welsh-medium education.
The first Welsh-medium schools provided education for children from Welsh speaking homes. But by the 1960s an increasing number of pupils in Welsh-medium schools came from non-Welsh speaking homes.
Today, in some areas, over 95% of pupils in Welsh-medium schools come from non-Welsh speaking homes.
Children from all sorts of linguistic backgrounds become bilingual speakers through the Welsh-medium education system. 18.8% of children aged 3-4 are able to speak Welsh. Of these, almost half (8.8%) have learnt Welsh outside the home (2001 Census).
